Hello there!
My name is Sarah Gonder (she/her) and thank you for checking our my platform for Materials Representative with the MES :)!
I have cultivated this action plan based on areas of improvement I have recognized in my past two years in the Materials Society. I have been a huge advocate for students within our department, and I am excited to extend this to the MES with your support!
Let’s dive in.

My Experience
Materials Science & Engineering Society
Engineers Without Borders

President, Materials Society (2020-21)
Thoroughly experienced with the Materials Society to better incorporate students and executives into collaborations, opportunities, and advocacy within the MES.
Successfully adopted alternatives to proctoring completely across MATLS courses.

Co-President, Engineers Without Borders (2019-20)
My passion for intersectional environmentalism, decarbonization, and creating systemic change are core to the involvement I have in extracurriculars.
I am excited to build on collaborations with NSBEMac and MES Wellness, along with other EDI clubs and teams.

My Key Platform Points

Increase dissemination of MES resources to materials students including academic support such as tutoring, wellness resources, equity and inclusion practices and training
Work to build financial and promotional support from the MES for department club-organized review / help sessions to better support volunteers and increase student awareness and attendance
Publish a monthly report on McMasterMSE.com on MES updates to increase awareness of important changes, events, and opportunities for students who do not attend MES meetings
Recruit a larger presence of materials students in large-scale decision-making processes in the MES
Improve communication between materials students and the MES by:
Creating an ongoing form which students can relay questions, concerns, or updates they would like relayed to the MES
Hosting more frequent general meetings for the Materials society open to the public
Work with MES technical clubs and teams to better advocate involvement of materials students within:
Feature technical teams on the Materials Society’s social media and website, McMasterMSE.com
Provide detailed role descriptions describing the team’s relation to a materials degree
Work to increase relationships between technical teams and the materials department, specifically with Dr. Zurob
Advocate with departments in support of alternatives to proctoring to:
Decrease proctoring within engineering
Better support departments who have multi-departmental courses in their curriculum
By collecting testimonials and recommendations from Materials faculty and other willing faculty who have used alternatives to proctoring
I think this role offers a huge opportunity to better unite the efforts of the MES and within our department at ensuring students success and reducing burnout.
Please email me at gonders@mcmaster.ca if you have any questions, concerns, or thoughts regarding my platform. I hope to better serve the materials students as a pivotal connection between the MES and Materials Society.
