Established in 1982 in memory of Denton E. Coates (Class of ‘70) by his friends.
Requirements: To be awarded to the student who, in the judgment of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has demonstrated outstanding achievement in independent research.

Established in 1999 by Air Liquide Canada.
Requirements: One scholarship to be awarded to a student in a Level 2 or 3 program in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering who, in the judgment of the Faculty of Engineering, has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The recipient must attain a minimum Fall-Winter Average of 9.5 at the most recent Fall/Winter terms.

Established in 1971 in memory of Professor R.K. Ham by his friends and former colleagues.
Requirements: Awarded to the student enrolled in Level 3 or above and who, in the judgment of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, shows most promise as a materials scientist or engineer.

Established in 2023 by Gyan Johari, a McMaster University professor of Materials Science and Engineering from 1984 to 2006, to support students studying thermodynamics, phase transition and structure of materials.
Requirements: To be awarded to undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering who attain the highest combined average in MATLS 3TP4, 3T04 and 3C03.

Established in 2019 in memory of Dr. Jason Lo a leader in emerging materials, and an outstanding scientist, renowned for his deep commitment to student research, who had a passion for innovation.
Requirements: To be awarded to students enrolled in Level 2 of any Materials Science and Engineering program who attain high averages.

Established in 2021 by Wei-Kao Lu, who was a McMaster Faculty member from 1965 to 1997 and was appointed Stelco Professor from 1973 to 1994, to support promising students in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
Requirements: To be awarded to undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering who attain the highest grade in Materials 4I03, Sustainable Manufacturing Processes.

Requirements: To be awarded to undergraduate students enrolled in Level 2 or above in a Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Materials Science Engineering program who attain high averages, demonstrate involvement in extracurricular or volunteer activities, and have an interest in pursuing an engineering consulting career.

Requirements: To be awarded to a student entering Level 2 of the Materials Engineering, Materials Engineering and Management or Materials Engineering and Society program who, in the judgment of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has achieved notable academic standing and demonstrated qualities of leadership at McMaster or in the community.

FDM Gilbert Chin Scholarship

Two Scholarships provided by the peer-reviewed scientific journal ACTA Materialia Inc.
One Scholarship provided in the memory of Gilbert Chin for an undergraduate sophomore or junior materials engineering student .
EDP Scholarship
$2,500
Up to three scholarships presented to junior or sophomore materials engineering students specializing in extraction, materials characterization, energy, recycling and sustainability, or process modeling.

You may apply for a maximum of two TMS sponsored scholarships per year. TMS will only award one of each scholarship per student per year.
Kaufman CALPHAD Scholarship

One scholarship awarded in honor of Dr. Larry Kaufman for metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or minerals processing/extraction students.

Pyrometallurgy Student Award

The presentation of this award is determined through a nomination procedure

Engineers Canada

The Engineers Canada Leadership Scholarship
Description: Eight scholarships of $4,000 (each) annually. These scholarships are available to undergraduate engineering students who demonstrate potential to be leaders in the field
Requirements:
A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
Enrolled full-time and in good standing with CEAB-accredited undergraduate engineering program at the scholarship deadline
Completed one year of studies at an CEAB-accredited program (as of August 31, 2024)
Be registered for at least two full-time semesters for the 2023-2024 academic year at a CEAB-accredited engineering program
Has not received the scholarship previously
Canadian Nuclear Society
Description: Given by the Canadian Nuclear Society to encourage students to do research in the nuclear field in the summer months. The selection will be made on the basis of academic standing

ASTM International
Norton Memorial Scholarship Award for Women
$1,000 USD
Due January 31st 2026
Description: ASTM Technical Committee E04 sponsors the Mary R. Norton Memorial Scholarship to encourage women undergraduate seniors or first-year graduate students to pursue the study of Physical Metallurgy or Materials Science with emphasis on the relationship of microstructure to material properties. Requirements:
Full-time student, either undergraduate senior or first-year graduate student.
Selection based on students interest/potential interest in physical metallurgy or materials science - evident by application statements and faculty recommendation.
AIST
Internship Scholarship
$6,000 USD and a Paid Summer Internship
Due October 31st
Description: The AIST Foundation offers up to thirty (30) Steel Intern Scholarships valued at US$6,000 per year each, including the Premier Intern Scholarship valued at US$12,000 per year. These scholarships require a commitment to a paid summer internship at a North American steel producing company or steel-related company during the Summer of 2022. Undergraduate and graduate students may apply.

Student in metallurgy, materials science, electrical, mechanical, chemical, industrial, environmental, computer science, data science, and safety
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on 4.0 scale
Citizen of NAFTA country (USA, Canada, Mexico)

AIST McMaster University Virtual Visit
AIST representatives hosted a virtual event at McMaster featuring the scholarships and various offerings of their organization to undergraduate materials science & engineering students. Past recipients of the AIST Internship Scholarship speak during the event about their internship experience.
